Osterman and Kottkamp (1993) states that reflective practice is a professional development process that is believed to be highly effective in achieving behavioural change.
Over the last 32 weeks I have learnt that there was so much more I had to learn as a learner, as a teacher, as a colleague and as a leader. I think that my reflections will continue so that as an educator I can learn from relevant research, so I can better meet the needs of the students in my class. I think my next step will be to include students in these reflections. I do on a small scale, but I could involve them further. This is my next step.
Changes that I have made to my practice have been gradual. The largest change came at the beginning of the year where I spend the first six weeks of the school year looking at growth mindset with the three classes in the syndicate. This changed the fixed mindset of my class to a growth mindset. All the children in my class responded to the Pit of Learning, and it is still mentioned in my classroom. "I am in the pit right now." "I am going to persevere so I can get out of the pit."
Another change is how I use technology in the classroom to enhance the children's learning. I have also stepped out of my comfort zone to take the risk of using more apps. I am learning from the children, and they are learning from me. The children love it when they teach me something!
Two aspects that have definitely changed for me are the following:
Criterion 4
Fully certified teachers demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional learning and development of personal professional practice.
As a teacher there is a need to commit to ongoing professional learning which adds value to my practice. I have enjoyed the time that I have spend with other teachers. We have communicated about the highs and lows, had laughs and conversed on topics that have produced interesting conversations or debates, of course which is healthy. Being in this circle as re-energised and motivated me in my teaching. The challenge for me is to think about what I will do next to keep my learning journey going.
Criterion 7
Full certificated teachers promote a collaborative, inclusive and supportive learning environment.
After completing the course my idea of how to create a classroom that reflects these three important components has changed. At the start of the year there was little collaboration but the team I work in has started to work more collaboratively in regards to planning, teaching and assessing. I am using more digital tools that will create an environment that has seen my students become more engaged, motivated and creative. The journey has started and it will continue ..........
